Honorable Mention Checkered Flags Michelle Jane Garvin Some never leave themselves: tortoise, great blue whale and the sea remain in the dust and wake of contrails, lucky not to travel circles, keen enough of soul to see the green backside of a checkered flag. Others never return - jackrabbit to halcyon mirages: oases limned with hooting and cooing. Endless hologram-possibilities, but climax dangles like carats on necklaces, hoops jaguar and shark penetrate to entertain an effigy. And there are those who go and journey back upstream, northward: a shadow approaching noon. Stop lapping their tracks in a labyrinth of hedges, re-discover tunnels through brambles, tree houses, forts: shortcuts home. Here, a doll’s head waits with grass seed on the soft loam of a new yard, to be re-attached. Here, fallen raindrops wink from metal: a Tonka truck, a tea set. Here, sunshine tickles like the kitten at my legs, like soda pop fizz on my nose, and I can laugh so hard that I nearly wet my pants.
